Sermon Outline:

Introduction ~ Scripture describes us as either dead to God or to sin

Background ~ you cannot be a Christian without dying Col 3:3

when mankind defied God there were consequences Gen 2:17

Adam & Eve disobeyed & consequences have followed Gen 5:5

all of us are guilty of this same rebellion Rom 5:12

we set ourselves up as gods in the place of God 2 Thess 2:4

Replacing God ~ we try to be our own god & make a mess of it

we follow the family tradition of defying God Col 1:21a

we weren’t created to exist apart form God Gen 1:26

trying to be our own little gods, we die Rom 7:11

that’s not what God intends for us Rom 8:7-8

Death ~ doesn’t have to be the end; we find God @ work Col 3:3

even so, what we were must be taken out of the way Gal 2:20

through the Holy Spirit we begin to change Gal 5:16  Col 3:3

this “death” (á¼€πεθάνετε) [ăp Ä•th ănʹ Ä•t Ä•] is in the aorist tense

we die to those things which were once what we lived for Col 3:3

we gain new life as we’re transformed Gal 3:17  Rom 6:5-6

Perfection ~ is God’s intent for us, yet He knows we cannot do it

“I have met the enemy, & he is me” Phil 2:5-7  2 Cor 5:16-17

we become dead to the world & alive to God in Christ Col 3:3

Our Part ~ how might we cooperate w/God? Spiritual Disciplines

they help us allow the Lord to work in our lives Col 3:5  John 15:5-6

Application ~ you may be wondering how? this is simple, but not easy

you face every decision you need to make & admit:

“Lord Jesus, I cannot do this, You never said I could”

then you confess “However, You can & always said You would!”

do that right now

For Contemplation:

Does my death with Jesus really change how I live right now?

Homiletical Idea:

“In Christ” my old life has ended.

For Prayer:

Lord, guide me to live for you and die to my old way of living!
