 SALTWATER DESALINATION AT HOME

Building a desalination unit at home is not that hard. The easiest unit to build is a thermal unit that uses the sun (solar energy). A thermal desalination unit can be constructed by building a tarp lined round pit that is exposed to the sun.

Dig a round pit deep enough to contain a 5 gallon bucket with room to spare on top and line the pit with black polythene plastic sheeting. Place a collection bucket in the center of the pit, and then fill the pit with unclean water i.e. seawater or other water source. Make sure the water level is below the tip of the collection bucket: you want to catch any condensed water, you do not want to fill the bucket with the unclean water surrounding the bucket.

Cover the entire pit with a clear sheet of polythene plastic, and then place a small rock on top of the plastic over the collection bucket's location. This rock will act as a funneling point for the water running off of the top plastic sheet. When water evaporates from the sun's heat, it will condense on the upper layer of plastic, run toward the rock and drip into the bucket. ---This can also be done on a smaller scale. ---
