Before an Earthquake
Repair defective utility wiring and connections
Bolt down large appliances
Place heavy objects and breakables on lower shelves
Anchor overhead lighting fixtures
Ensure residence is anchored to its foundation
Install flexible pipe fittings
Locate safe spots in each room
Hold earthquake drills with family members
During an Earthquake
Minimize your movements
Take cover under a sturdy desk or table
Stay away from glass, windows, outside doors
If you are in bed, stay there and protect your head with a pillow
Use a doorway for shelter only if it is close and is a strongly supported, load bearing doorway
Stay indoors until shaking has stopped
Be aware the electricity may go out
Do not use elevators
